Kumiko Tsuji



Pittsburgh Ballet Theater principal dancer, Kumiko Tsuji was born in Tokyo, Japan where she trained at the Kishibe Ballet Studio in Tokyo and later at The Royal Ballet School in London. She was the semi-finalist at the Prix de Lausanne and was a member of the Hong Kong Ballet prior to coming to PBT in 2003.

I like the second photo a lot more than the first...nice light.

Really like contrast between the dark background and the light foreground subject(s. I do not like the second photo, I think it is too far away and the santa hat is killing me.

I like the light in these. I wish you would have worked it more. I'd like to see her doing something in that environment and with that light.

Thanks for all the comments. I guess I should clarify the assignment a bit to explain why I didn't shoot a ballerina doing ballet. Another photographer had shot Kumiko in action, so my assignment was to do a portrait of her in "street clothes." The paper suggested the locker room, which was small and cramped, so I opted instead for a clean background and three flashes (2-SB600s and a SB800). I really wanted something a little more unexpected, but oh well...sometimes you just have to work with what you got.
